Abstract
The acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) was first identified in 1979 and appeared in San Francisco in1981. Since then it has been recognized in other urban areas & on other continents. Because the mode of infection is similar to that of hepatitis B dentists and dental hygienists, as well as dental auxillaries, comprise a potentially high risk group.
In dental practice, therefore, all cares present special problems that do not exist in hospital medicine.
Dental procedures, impression and scaling etc. Frequently have blood on them and are always contaminated with saliva. Because these fluids and subsequent casts have the potential transmission of AIDS, CMV, or hepatitis, many precautions are recommended.
